Judas and the Black Messiah

Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons

Synopsis: Darius from Atlanta fucked up.

Review: Why did I stop writing nonsensical movie reviews on here for every movie I watch even if they don't relate to the movie and make no sense?

I dunno, good question.

Judas and the Black Messiah gets 5 out of 5.

Biggest Positive: I learned another heart breaking piece of U.S. history which I was only vaguely aware of.

Biggest Negative: I learned another heart breaking piece of U.S. history which I was only vaguely aware of.

Trivia: To prepare for the role, LaKeith actually travelled through time to infiltrate the real Black Panthers of the time.

Rating: 5/5

Plan 9 From Outer Space (RiffTrax Special Event)

Cast: Some dudes from RiffTrax and 3 Different Bela Lugosi's.

Synopsis: RiffTrax is a format in which you pay money to watch an incredibly bad movie while three guys talk over it making snarky comments. Plan 9 From Outer Space is basically the worst movie ever and the commentary is therefore about 57.6% more snarky than usual. Why do grown well-thinking people spend money to watch something awful while some weird people ruin the movie, you ask? Well, I guess you have to be there...

Review: Can I really review this? I mean, do I review the film itself or do I review the RiffTrax guys commentary on it? Do I review the surprise appearance by Mr. Jonathan Coulton? Or do I review the amazingly awful (in a good way) 'sponsor' videos from Something Awful? Or do I just ask a bunch of questions about who I should review and not actually really say a damn thing about it?

Yeah, that sounds good.

In Short: RiffTrax are awesome and, while I wish they were still using little robot puppets to make their commentary, they are still it seems equally as amusing as MST3K. We recently purchased their RiffTrax DVD release for Night Of The Living Dead, so you can look forward to a review of that as griping and informative as this one.

Biggest Positive: All things of the evening combined (The audience, the movie, the slightly confusing yet mildly intriguing 'O' faces Jonathan Coulton makes when he reaches high notes), I basically felt like I was right in the middle of "Giant Nerd-Fest 2009".

Biggest Negative: All things of the evening combined (The audience, the movie, the way that a nose flute has never been so masterfully used during a screening of an Ed Wood movie - at least this year), I basically felt like I was right in the middle of "Giant Nerd-Fest 2009".

Trivia: Bela Lugosi is still alive and living in the back of your fridge behind that potatoe salad you just won't throw away.

Burn After Reading

Cast: Everyone

Synopsis: I'm really not sure what happens in this film in spite of watching it in it's entirity only a few short hours ago...

Review: George Clooney's nuts and takes his shirt off, Brad Pitt's a crazy guy who, in spite of looking like a total douch-bag and dork-face, still looks hot, Frances MacDormand is quirky and says things like "Oh for Pete's sake!", John Malkovich gets all frustrated and swears at people (While in a floral dressing gown, holding a gun in one hand and a shot of liquor in the other), Tilda Swinton plays a stuck up bitch and J.K. Simmons once again plays an angry guy with a desk job.

What more could you need in a movie?

An automated sex dildo swing chair?

Done!

The perfect movie...

In Short: This review was already short...

Biggest Positive: Doesn't stop to let you cease being entertained from start to finish

Biggest Negative: I'll probably forget it existed and confuse it with a bunch of Wes Anderson and Spike Jonez films after a couple of months

Burn After Reading's Website

Trivia: I was going to see this at the cinema when it came out but when I read my ticket stub I burned it afterwards (obviously), and so was refused entry.
I set fire to the DVD Sleeve when it arrived in the mail today but fortunately my wife wrestled the DVD itself into the player before I had a chance to read the cover.
My attempts at setting fire to my TV screen were fruitless.

The Main Street Museum

Normally I review movies here on this blog but the only reason for that is because sitting on my couch slowly dozing off while the latest offering from Netflix (Yes, I don't even bother to leave the house to get movies, thanks) flickers on my television screen is just about the only thing I ever do.
I'm only kidding.
It is the only thing I ever do.
However last weekend events beyond my control dictated that not only did I have to leave the house but that we all had to take an epic 2 and a half hour journey to a place they call "White River Junction".
Ask anyone if they've been to White River Junction and you'll be greeted with one of two responses:
"That's not a real place!" or
"Get away from me you brazen hippie!"
Not too pleasant but nevertheless understandable since people fear and hold disdain for that which they don't know and since White River Junction in the entire span of it's existence has held host to all of about three visitors who weren't just stopping to get gas or to visit the stretch of stores just off the interstate without actually braving heading into the actual town you can see why not many people seem to know it really exists.
But rest assured it does! And for fear of over-crowding the little town with the hordes upon hordes of people that will doubtlessly be reading this blog (All one of you) I have to say everyone should definitely visit there!
All around Vermont you're likely to find countless little towns with quirks and homeliness that makes you just want to pack everything you own into a shopping cart, push it over a cliff and start a new life as a traveling poet but none as much as White River Junction.
The whole town oozes (That's a good thing!) of art and creativity. It's really hard to describe why that is but trust me, once you take your first drive around town you should see what I mean and if you don't well... get stuffed!
But anyway all that the town has in store is waiting for you and you should just up and go there and start your second life as a painter of abstract velvet paintings as soon as possible but this isn't a review of a town, that would be patently absurd! This is a review of the eclectic, the wonderful, the... uh... other descriptive word...

Main Street Museum

Of all the glories that the town holds in store for you none could possibly be as beautifully wonderful as the Main Street Museum. "What's so special about a pansy-assed faggoty museum?" you ask? Well, frankly if you're asking questions with that wording I highly recommend not ever reading this blog again but what makes it unique is how it probably couldn't exist in most other places...
The exhibits in the museum while for the most part are quite probably stuff you'd find in any other museum of it's size (It's only one fairly long room) like mounted animal heads, old books, bones, Elvis Presley's gallstones... wait, what?!?!

That's right I said Elvis Presley's gallstones are located at the Main Street Museum! You may ask me "But how could you know that they're really Elvis's gallstones and not the gallstones of some regular schmo like Christopher Walken?" and I'd say to you
  1. Who gives a fuck?
  2. Why would they make up a story about someone's gallstones of all things? and
  3. To ask whether they're really Elvis's is, I think, missing the point
You see, this is what makes the Museum brilliant, I think.
Most of the exhibits here could not be in a museum in many other places in the world because people would question authenticity and worse still question their merit as exhibits in a museum. The audacity... the truth is if this museum was located in a larger town or city of almost any other nature than White River Junction all too many people would come out shaking their heads and muttering about how the curator had clearly just roamed around town picking up garbage from the streets, dusting it off and putting it in a frame. People, the general public I mean, would not tolerate someone calling this place a museum and would instill on it a law naming it a "garage sale" instead but that's because the general public are detestable morons (no offense).
The truth is that a lot of what lies in the museum is just stuff found lying around town - garbage, road-kill... you name it! But the beauty lies in that there's no hiding it... it's open for display in the "hobo exhibit" for all to see, or comes with plaques describing where and when the said piece of trash was found. That's not to say it's all that, there are many oddities like the gallstones that you can't just find lying around your average city street. Take this fine example...

It's the... skeletal remains of an umbrella... okay, bad example!

But there is this:

It's a monster! I believe these "remains" were found in the Connecticut river.
So the museum isn't entirely composed of things that we may see every day lying around the road or in our dumpsters, carefully labeled with a story and a feeling of really seeing the "everyday" (It's a bit like the Museum was founded by The Wombles actually, now that I think about it. Now that I really think about it we never met the owner, just a volunteer! HOLY SHIT! I Have been in the presence of Great Uncle Bulgaria! Actually, never mind it seemed much more of an "Orinoco" kind of place... Apologies to any Americans reading this who might be scratching their heads and wondering what the fuck a "Womble" is and what psychotropic drugs I might have ingested to make me begin spouting such nonsense... on with the blog!) but also carefully crafted and highly imaginative art (Or, if you want to believe it was the body of a monster from the river, go ahead!)! There were several oddities like the monster above including this Killer Flying Jackalope!

This one might fool you since they put it along side a bunch of real mounted and stuffed animals! In fact, it was right after this one:

Which might make you think "Hey! That rabbit's not real! I hardly think I'll be fooled by any oddities in this museum if that's the best they can do!"
Then when you turn round and see the Jackalope you're utterly convinced that this being can be nothing but a creature spawned by the devil himself!
Here is the terrifying tale of the Jackalope:

The Jackalope are native of the arid Western Plains and Rocky Mountain Regions of the United States L. artiodactyla phasianus is a hybrid resultant from interbreeding of the pygmy-deer and a species of "killer-rabbit". Jackalopes will only breed during electrical storms including hail, explaining its rarity. The animals can convincingly imitate any sound, including the human voice. It uses this ability to elude pursuers, chiefly by using phrases such as "There he goes! That way!"

A jackalope may be caught by putting a flask of whiskey out at night. The jackalope will drink its fill of whiskey and its intoxication will make it easier to hunt. In some parts of the United States it is said that jackalope meat has a taste similar to lobster. Female jackalopes can be milked as they sleep belly up and that the milk can be used for a variety of medicinal purposes.

The extremely shy and elusive animals are dangerous if approached, having sharp horns like its ancestors, horned four legged ruminants "haunting the banks of the Euphrates, very savage, hard to catch and having long saw-like horns capable of cutting down trees".

I think the Jackalope was my favorite of the oddities the museum had to offer.
But not my favorite thing which was quite clearly the encyclopedia of miniature books!

Which was, in all reality, a book about various books throughout history that are incredibly small and... get this...it was small itself!!!!!!!!!!! Holy shit!

No?

Well, anyway my point is this: If you visit the Main Street Museum (And you should, admission is just a meager $3) you'll likely come back with your own favorites which will probably be something that other visitors to the museum didn't even see when they went! And if you don't, and you come out muttering about people picking up trash and charging you to see it well fuck you and the horse you rode in on! Get out of my blog, asshole!

The fact that the Main Street Museum exists in White River Junction and fits in and people don't get confused about it's purpose I think must be a testament to the greatness of the people of White River Junction, either that or they just haven't noticed it yet.

The Main Street Museum's website can be found here: www.mainstreetmuseum.org/, you really should check out their Catawiki where you can find out about all their various exhibits.

The Signal

Who doesn't like movies about fucked up shit happening because of weird telepathic, radioactive, mind controlling hypno-signals coming through the T.V.?
Well, a lot of people... probably why this film wasn't terribly popular as far as I know but it should have been! And it's popular in my book, gosh darn it!

Anyway, the film is split into three parts (It also has three directors - coincidence? Or a sign of something more sinister?) each of which deals with, firstly the fact that a strange transmission is coming through all T.V.s, telephones and radios that is somehow driving everyone who watches or listens to it crazy but mostly following the steps of a young woman named... uh... I forgot her name... whoever! Who is being pursued by her enraged husband Lewis and her secret lover Ben both of whom have different degrees of "the crazy" from watching the strange broadcast.

This film is excellently done, each director manages to get you to really see how every single character genuinely thinks they're the sane ones and everyone else went nuts and then quickly switching it up and reminding you that "Oh! That guy's crazy too, I forgot he likes to spray rat poison in people's mouths! Silly me!".

Point is, excellent movie, excellent point, excellent acting, excellent excelsiur, excellent overall.

Definitely see this one if you like movies about people going nuts and talking to severed heads.

V For Vendetta

V for Vendetta was a sweet magic carpet ride over the Arabian desert of conscious being
It was a sucker punch from the artistic bowels of Muhammad Ali
It was a single wrapped up golden present in the bottom of my Christmas stocking
It was a fire blazing deep in the night with no origin and the fuel of a million matches
It was a giraffe in a movie-forest full of zebra
It was a heat seeking panther
It was cold soothing rain on a warm summer evening: refreshing and longed for
It was a blank canvas in which all my thoughts and feeling could be painted
It was
Fucking awesome!

Grindhouse - Planet Terror and Some Film By Quentin Tanartino

Grindhouse
This, for those of you who are unaware, is a double feature movie. The first half, Planet Terror, directed and written by Robert Rodriguez and the second half, Death Proof, by Quentin Tarantino. The film opens with a fake trailer for a film called Machete which kicks your ass! It stars Danny Trejo as a bad-ass Mexican immigrant who's all about killing many people with kick-ass weapons with a kick-ass bike and stuff...It's an obvious parody of Rodriguez's films and is done hilariously! You could maybe search for it online and maybe watch it. This one is hilarious from start to finish in my opinion and seems like it'd make an awesome Rodriguez film. Luckily for us, he's making it into one! Huzzah! Moving on... I think that was followed by the first feature: Planet Terror! This film was shot in a way that made it seem like a B-movie in every way except the effects are realistic, which gives it an odd new-old B-movie modernised feel. It's hilarious in how it pokes fun at itself and the whole genre all at the same time as being an awesome zombie-esque film. There's more guns and shooting and explosions than you can shake a stick at, and even the most ridiculous of events is met with such seriousness that the whole audience can't help but piss their panties from giggling so hard. So let's see. there's explsoions... there's guns... there's blood... there's zombie-esqueness... there's car crashes... there's boobies... what could be missing?! Bruce Willis, that's what! And he's right there and he's awesome and this whole movie kicks everyone's ass in a way I thought nothing ever could. From there, I believe we go to more fake trailers? I think next was something about werewolves and nazi ss troops and stuff. It was fairly random but just fell short of being hilarious (despite the part at the end of the trailer that I laughed harder than I've laughed at anything in my life about because I'm awesome). It was directed by Rob Zombie, and uhh... there isn't much to say about it without giving away the hilarious 'twist'! So I won't... Then there was the gripping thriller "Don't" which treaded on the fine line between making you want to tear the arms off your cinema seats from frustration and absolute hilarity. It starts off by being overly 'gripping' and tense and ends being loud and obnoxious. I spotted the guy from League Of Gentlemen in it too. It was pretty damn funny but compared to the other blood-and-guts themed trailers and movie before it, it stood out as being a little odd. It was directed by Edgar Wright though, what daya think about that motherfucker!? To conclude the fake trailer section we had a rather amusing spoof of the slasher genre by Eli Roth (Who, by the way, I think is a total asslicker) called Thanksgiving, a play on how many horror films take their names from holidays though I think it was hard for that fact to be conveyed in the trailer. This one is possibly the best trailer from the set, though 'Machete' either beats it or is a close second. It mocks a genre which is, I think, far better and easier to mock than the other trailers did (I dunno what Werewolf Nazi Bastard Zombie Fest SS whatever was spooofing though...)and I think that plays to it's advantage. Eli Roth managed to get a tally on my good side! As a writer I think Eli Roth stands out as being relatively awesome but as a director and a person I pretty much think he sucks ass... but I think he's still on the positive side of my rating bar after 'Thanksgiving' (And will probably remain there until I throw up watching Hostel: part II, and I won't be throwing up in disgust at the gore, it'll be because because it'll suck). In conclusion, I give Grindhouse 5/5 Oh, I forgot After Thanksgiving, Quentin Tarantino concluded this 3 hour blood, guts, guns n' explosions fest with an hour and a half of people sitting round talking. In conclusion, The end! Grindhousemovie.net
